Cockroaches are being defined as common insect pests infesting homes and other food service establishments. They are insects of order Blattaria. The name cockroach was derived from the Spanish word cucaracha, chafer, beetle; which from cuca meaning “kind of caterpillar”. It is said that there are about 4,500 species of cockroach, of which only 30 species are associated with human residences and about five species are highly recognized as pests.Basically, cockroaches are considered disgusting and unpleasant to most people merely by their presence. They tend to live in a wide range of environments around the world, but prefer warm areas and conditions found commonly within any buildings and structures. They leave chemical trails in their feces as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. This serves as the reason why they are capable of mechanically transmitting disease organisms such as bacteria and viruses which result food poisoning and other ailments.Types of CockroachesThere are five well-known species of cockroaches that enters our home. These include:American CockroachThis type is probably the biggest among the five types which has a yellow band across its head.German CockroachGerman cockroaches are the most persistent kind of cockroaches in the United States. This roaches multiplies very rapidly. This is due to the reason that the egg capsule is only released when the babies are ready to emerge.Oriental CockroachThis kind of cockroaches is found commonly in high moisture areas similar to damp basements.Smoky Brown CockroachSmoky brown cockroaches are related to the American cockroaches but are distinguished because of their smaller size, measured as over 1 inch long and have uniform mahogany color.Brownbanded cockroachThe brownbanded cockroach is contemplated to be one of the smaller cockroaches that are measured about ½ inches long.
