People With Anxiety – Understanding Anxiety and Charting A Path To Restoring Balance In Your Life

Limited exposure to anxiety can make you feel euphoric and often translates into giving your anxiety riddled friends advice on how to stay positive. But guess what, even the most positive person can be dragged down to the lowest depths of anxiety and depression under the right set of circumstances. Now granted these super positive, and well meaning, people with little anxiety would never admit to this possibility, but nevertheless it is the case. The reason lies in some of the biological causes of anxiety. Anxiety is a form of the age old survival mechanism of -œfight or flight- in which to survive you a person will either flee or fight. This mechanism goes hand in hand with anxiety and is caused by a number of endocrine hormones, primarily adrenaline and noradrenalin. When secreted your body swings into survival mode with the heart rate increasing and blood flow being redirected to the parts of the body deemed necessary for survival. Once the either perceived, or real threat is gone, things will return to normal, even though you may feel a little drained. And let’s face in the modern world we live in today we may not be dealing with getting eaten by a lion or tiger but rather getting eaten alive by an irate boss that is dedicated to our demise, which in some ways can be equally as frightening.

But there is another factor that makes people more vulnerable to anxiety and nervousness and that is a genetic mutation that limits the production of serotonin. Serotonin is one of a handful of brain neurotransmitter chemicals (others being dopamine and norepinephrine) that bridge the gap between billions of synapses in the brain. How much serotonin in our brains determine both how we view the world and how well we are able to deal with anxiety, depression, and feeling down. The bottom line is if you don’t have enough serotonin floating around in your brain, you become vulnerable to any number of mood disorders including anxiety. Combine this with other extenuating factors such as environment, peers, and how you were raised and all of the sudden what should be a small blip on the radar of anxiety turns into a bigger than life event that last much longer than it should. What all this means is that some people are simply better equipped to handle life’s challenges than others. Recognizing where you fall on this scale is an important part of determining whether self help methods will be enough to restore balance in your life or professional help will be needed. If you feel self help methods for anxiety could be enough then there are a few helpful ideas worth considering. First you will need to recognize and accept your anxiety about specific fears or situations, and then formulate a plan to deal with them; second, make sure you are getting enough rest; third, stay active not allowing anxiety to gain the upper hand; fourth, make it a point to do something you enjoy each and every day; fifth, try to live in the present, not dwelling on past problems or what might happen in the future; and lastly implement a herbal remedy for anxiety if needed. Herbal remedies for anxiety can be a valuable tool especially for those difficult times when you need that little bit of extra help to get over that giant pile of nervous tension standing in your way.
