Mood Disorders and Sleep

Mood and sleep disorders are a bad combination but they’re common in many people, especially the elderly. The good news is that you can resolve this problem just by changing the way you sleep.Mood disorders are present in one-third to one-half of patients having chronic sleep problems. Many patients with mood disorders suffer from insomnia. Sadly, this problem is often undiagnosed. That’s why its best to be aware of any sleep problems to alert one of possible mood disorders.Surprisingly, reduced sleep can also trigger mood disorders. Studies show that 25 to 65 percent of bipolar patients with a manic episode experienced a social rhythm disruption before the episode. Social rhythm disruption is a disturbance in the sleep/wake cycle. Watching a late night movie, online chatting, a serious health problem or a death in the family can cause this disruption. Its also interesting to note that 85 percent of patients with unipolar depression experience insomnia even though bipolar patients tend to experience hypersomnia or excessive sleeping. Hypersomnia can likewise be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder together with a decreased quality of sleep which is common in depressive patients – both insomniacs and hypersomniacs.Poor sleeping habits brought about by these problems can also result in fibromyalgia. This is a painful, non-degenerative muscle disorder marked by widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is found in about two percent of Americans. Women are the usual victims and the risk of getting the disease increases with age. Fibromyalgia symptoms are often brought about by a physical or emotional trauma. All these problems can be avoided with good sleeping habits. Consult a doctor for the right treatment. Want to sleep on time? Why not get a modern alarm clock that you can speak to and obeys your every command?
