The major pitfalls for not embracing standardized, methodological automated change management process would include, inter alia, the following: · Unstructured and Inefficient approval process. · Lack of proper evaluation and review and change failures. · Failure of back-out plans or non-existent back-out plans. · Uninformed and confused end-users unable to cope with abrupt changes, mostly failing. · lack of visibility into change dependencies and proper testing/QA procedure. The importance of controlling change in the IT environment has grown significantly in the last few years. This shift in priorities has had a major impact on mid-sized businesses, which have needed to increase their focus on IT compliance and initiatives centered on security, control, and documentation. This emphasis on change management is an outgrowth of regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley; an increase in the adoption of best practices in IT, such as the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL); and general trends of corporate accountability. The challenge for change management today focuses on organizational and technological maturity. Most IT shops have been busy building out their technology infrastructure and fighting fires along the way. Now more and more IT organizations are realizing the reasons why change management warrants the time and investment required to meet accountability needs. Investing in change management software is a necessary step for midsize businesses, otherwise it will impede the IT division in scaling the maturity level to sustain organizational growth. It has to be keep in mind for many successful corporate bodies, the It department work as a strategic partner rather than being a subservient support entity. Similarly, a weak IT without structured practices and adequate system/tools may become a corporate handicap. The mid-size companies need to understand the efficacy of the ITIL methodologies and establish an effective of IT service management frame work. The two most important areas that need some investment in the ITSM space are ITIL change management and CMDB /configuration management. Apart from delineating the logical process flow, it is necessary to have some kind of ITSM system or application that would automate the processes defined.
