Affirmations can be really helpful to break bad habits if you are persistent about it.In order for you to really break bad habits you must: a) be aware that the unconscious mind exists and b) learn how to manipulate its existence.And affirmations are great and powerful techniques in which, if used effectively, could bring out and address directly to your unconscious being.By uttering simple positive statements of the way you wish to live your life, then reiterating them out loud daily, you teach your unconscious thoughts in order to guide you to a better path to be reflected by your whole senses.You can use:1) Situational statements: one of a kind affirmations which provide a definite aim in your life. Some examples are:a) “My heart and lungs are healthy.”b) “I am very happy to be earning $120, 000 per year.”2) Timeless affirmations. These are statements which can be made use at any point in your life.a) “My body is healthy and strong.”b) “I am so happy in every aspect of my life”In speaking these words over and over daily, they penetrate into our subconscious mind till it becomes our reality.Moreover, the positive language of these “feel-good” affirming sentences blocks off negative thought processes, and in effect, fosters positive attitude.To fortify this belief, each day, every morning, when you get ready for the day, you can try to spare at least 10 minutes of your time in uttering these affirmations out loud. Simply listen to your own voice as you speak these and try to be detached and unemotional as you can.And lastly, it is very important that you must try to obstruct any negativity and concentrate 100% of your language and attention to the affirmations that you are saying out loud.

Coaching Youth Sports the Right Way

Remember the George Allen quote adopted by every high school football coach? -œFootball is like the game of life.- When I was a young athlete, that old cliché really irritated me. Sports were supposed to be fun. And the game of life -¦ well, that was something else. Then I grew up, had kids of my own, and became a recreation league coach of football and several other sports. I have not used Mr. Allen’s cliché myself, but I have learned the real wisdom behind it. When youth sports are coached well, they do help kids to learn how to live a good life.

Regardless of the sport or the age of the child, there are three fundamental lessons a coach should teach, summarized as Self, Group and Fun. · Self: I get better at something when I work at it. · Group: I am responsible to others and they are responsible to me. · Fun: I can enjoy life through physical activity and community. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t lecture players about becoming -œfully realized personalities- or -œmore responsible members of the world community.- We never mention such weighty subjects at practice. What I do is to try to keep these higher purposes in mind as I structure practices. Kids will learn about themselves and their relationship to the team, and then apply these lessons to other relationships and to their daily lives. VICTORY AND DEFEAT It isn’t necessary to win games for kids to learn these lessons, but it does help. A victory is a tangible reward for their efforts and proves that it has been worthwhile. Still, of the two philosophies, I favor the traditional, -œIt’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game,- over Lombardi’s -œWinning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.- Of course when I play or coach, I really want to win. Fortunately, I have found over the years that if coaches and players follow certain guidelines, they do tend to win games. But even in defeat, the coach and players tend to absorb the loss into a larger experiential context. Experiencing defeat is part of life – for most of us, a regular part. It’s a valuable lesson if players learn that effort and group solidarity enhance the enjoyment of playing well– even for a losing cause. GUIDELINES Practice is often the best time to teach the three fundamental objectives of Self, Group and Fun. In order to balance the three, use the following guidelines: Work on the fundamental skills required for the individual player to play well. Once at a sports banquet I attended, then Indiana University basketball coach, Bob Knight, told us that the most important ingredient in developing a basketball player’s ability are the -œfundamentals.- Whether you like or dislike Bob Knight, you cannot argue with the evidence of his success in bringing out the best in players by drilling them on the fundamentals of basketball. This is especially helpful for younger players who have just been introduced to a sport. Spend time individually with each player working on their weak points and encouraging any potential talents. This element of practice may be blended with fundamental skill work. On the one hand, every child has areas of play that need improvement. On the other, most kids like some aspect of the game best, and practice should be a means for kids to enjoy their favorite part of the sport. Engage players in group activities that require teamwork to accomplish common goals. Social psychologists discovered years ago that disunited individuals and diverse groups may be brought together when circumstances create -œsuper-ordinate goals.- In English, that means sharing a common goal brings people together. Any drills that require two or more players to cooperate to achieve something, such as running a relay or set plays, create super-ordinate goals for the players. A simple illustration is to take four runners and require that they pass a baton. Runners have to work together to make a relay work. Achieving common goals through collective action is the essence of teamwork. Teach players that each of them has a responsibility to the team to try to play well and that the team has a responsibility to recognize each player’s contribution. Christopher Lasch points out in his book, The Culture of Narcissism, that focusing on self-aggrandizement usually leads to unhappiness rather than glory. Considering the attention advertisers and the media pay to individual sports stars, it’s an uphill battle to convince kids they’ll be most happy within the context of a team, i.e., being a -œteam player.- But kids need to learn that for effective teamwork, each player must play hard no matter what the role. That may mean being the player who is set up to score, or it may mean donning heavy and self-effacing gear of goalie or catcher. A team needs each position to be played for the team At a sports banquet I attended in high school, the legendary coach John Wooden put it something like this: -œThere may be no -˜I’ in team, but the team is a team when all the -œme’s- become -œwe.- Play the game. Kids join a team to play. Practicing sports help kids grow in many ways, but sports should always include an element of fun. And what’s most fun about sports is playing. Encourage kids to practice on their own and continue to play sports in the future. Two images Americans love are: an inner-city kid on a cracked concrete court working his jump shot over and over through a netless rim; or a farm boy whacking a baseball against the door of a desultory barn until the cover is worn off the ball and the paint off the door. We appreciate these images because they stir in us the picture of love of sport. But developing love of a sport takes more than just going to practice. Even those kids who will never be standouts will feel better about themselves if they come back next season with an improved backhand or a better curve ball. They’ll also be more appreciated by the team. And most importantly, a kid who learns that sports can be enjoyed outside of organized athletics has a lifetime of fun ahead of him. A TYPICAL PRACTICE Consider a typical practice I conducted with the last soccer team I coached for six-year olds. First, we do a little running and stretching. Next, we form a circle and work on proper passing technique. At the same time, I quiz the kids on the names of their teammates. Learning everyone’s name becomes fun, because it is associated with play. Next is drilling on individual skills. Proper kicking and passing is repetitively practiced. I try to remind each player of the fundamentals, such as -œkeep your eye on the ball as you kick- and -œstrike the ball at the bottom of your big toe.- While giving these instructions, I run the kids through exercises requiring them to aim their kicks at targets or to use their left foot for kicking. I try to keep drills interesting, but focused on fundamentals. Skills drills are work, but the fun comes with getting better. I can see the delight on a kid’s face as she kicks the ball farther than she did the last practice. I praise her – not just for kicking well, but for working hard and improving. For the kids, then, the payoff of their hard work is evident in that moment of success. The teamwork phase of practice is comprised of drills, set plays or relays requiring cooperation among the players. When they work on plays or run relays, the kids directly experience the necessity of cooperation to achieve a common goal. Think of the movie -œHoosiers.- The coach, played by Gene Hackman, forbid any player from taking a shot at the basket until the ball had been passed at least four times. Eventually the players realized that teamwork made scoring easier for each player. If you have to pass the ball four times before anyone can even try to score, eventually you will come to associate passing (cooperation) with scoring. On the other hand, the kids joined the team to play the sport, not just to drill and learn to cooperate. So, we always have a practice game after group drills. (For individual sports such as swimming or track, this can be more difficult. The kids can’t go through an entire meet at the end of practice. But they can play related games such as water polo or shot-put relays. Any activity that incorporates the sport into a fun event involving the whole team will work.) Finally, at the end of practice, I talk to the players. What are their concerns? What are my concerns as coach? I try to give practical advice about improvements the players and the team can make. And I always encourage them to play the sport outside of practice. Finally, we do our -œhuddle up- ritual: We gather in the middle of the field, put our hands together, and yell, -œGoooooo Lazers!- FAITH AND VALUES Most of my coaching has been done in a secular context. Even the YMCA and church leagues in which I have coached have rules prohibiting evangelism by the coaches. But the principles of Christian community and ethics are obvious in the coaching guidelines I use. As a coach, I am concerned about the development of each member of the team, just like a minister is concerned about the spiritual development of his parishioners. The team, when it works as a team, is like a church – as the Apostle Paul describes it – with all parts working together. And playing a sport is like living a faithful life. It is challenging, fun, develops the self, and promotes communal cooperation. Without being explicitly evangelistic, coaching offers a wonderful and rewarding opportunity to teach and show by example the Christian faith. Your faith will show through in the way you conduct yourself with your players, their parents, other coaches, and referees. Abusive or tyrannical behavior by a coach, who is supposedly a Christian, does not shine a light toward Christ and reveals the coach as a hypocrite. I would encourage every Christian woman and man who has enjoyed athletics in their own lives to take up the challenge of coaching. Not only is it an opportunity to pass on our values to the next generation, but it’s -¦ well, like the game of life. Coffee Roasts
Today it seems like there are so many coffee roasts and coffee flavors to choose from. Ecosystem Economics

It is not easy to miss the signs of destruction of nature where ever one goes. Tall skyscrapers and the large cranes building them are a constant feature of every city in the world. Mountains of granite and rocks are being flattened, trees cut and rivers diverted to provide the raw materials for the construction industry. It is estimated that about 90% of all non-fuel mineral use and a large proportion of timber use goes into the construction industry. It is easy to fuel economic growth, especially in the short term with no regard to the damage that it is causing on longer term environmental and social sustainability. What we need to find are imaginative and constructive solutions, that not only fuel growth and economic development, but also restore to the earth some of her natural bounties.There have been some experiments for restoration of forests and mangroves that have yielded multi-million dollar returns. These are the projects that need to be highlighted, as a recent report by the UN Environment Programme titled Dead Planet, Living Planet: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Restoration for Sustainable Development has done. Of course, what we need to do first is preserve the ecosystems that we already have, but given the fact that over 60% of them are already badly degraded, we need to give restoration activities a priority.Poverty, unemployment and land degradation is a vicious circle that has been in evidence in the last few decades. The fact is that this circle can be reversed by restoring, repairing and rehabilitating ecosystems which can lead to creation of millions of jobs and lifting families out of the poverty trap.An example of this reversal is shown in the example of the restoration of degraded grasslands in and around the rivers that flow in South Africa’s Drakensberg Mountains. This region is home to 299 recorded bird species which makes for about 40% of all non-marine avian species in southern Africa. A study estimates that the project will bring river flows back during the crucial winter months to a tune of up to 4 million cubic metres of water (MCM), apart from the added advantage of storing carbon. The project is estimated to cost Euro 3.6 million over seven years with an annual cost of Euro 800,000 for its management. The returns are expected to be Euro 6 million a year while generating over 300 permanent jobs and 2.5 million person-days of work during the restoration phase. While I am no economist, it looks like a pretty good rate of return to me!In fact, we if begin to factor in ecological costs and benefits to all projects, be they large infrastructure projects like roads and dams or smaller projects of building a farmhouse, the economics of it can begin to look a lot different. It is estimated that ecological infrastructure of the planet generates services of between $21 trillion to$72 trillion a year. Just for comparison, the Gross World Income last year was $58 trillion. Therefore, if this cost is taken into account when determining accounts, the balance sheet and projected profits of many projects would look fundamentally different than they do today.The UNEP report mentioned above lists out a number of areas in which ecological services provide direct benefits, which are measurable in dollar terms. These include $23 trillion for storm protection in the United States, an average of $33-$153 per household in Indian villages located near mangroves that serve as storm barriers, at least $153 billion for pollination costs to agricultural plants by bees and insects, and large savings in pesticides due to natural pest control.Of course, most of the services provided by ecosystems are not measurable. How does one put a value to the views of the valleys, the worth of water or the peace of the peaks? We need to make sure that we protect what we have and restore what is still repairable to ensure that the world we live in still has things that do not have price tags attached to them. 

Basic Basketball Passing

Basic skills of passing are just like the basics of shooting, dribbling, and defense. B-ball players must maintain balance, have vision, have touch, and awareness. Just like each of the traits mentioned before…they take practice to develop.The basics:Positioning and Vision: You will pass out of a variety of scenarios depending on your position and circumstances you are confronted with; inbounds pass, back to the basket in a post-up, facing the hoop in triple threat, while on the dribble, and many more. Throwing a post-entry pass from the wing is much different than a full-court baseball pass on a buzzer beater inbounds, but a couple things are always constant: You should try to always stay balanced and always have your head up surveying the floor. Secure the ball: Learning to use pass fakes and learning to use your body to shield passes. If you don’t learn how to do these things, you will turn the ball over and will be sitting at the end of the bench. Always keep your body between a defender and the ball when making a pass, step around the defense to make a pass, or use a pass fake in the opposite direction of where you actually intend to pass to get the defense out of your way.The easy pass: 99% of the passes you make in your career aren’t going to make any highlight reels. In fact, it is often the pass THAT LEADS to a pass that results in an easy basket. A strong passer can see that if they pass to the guy at the top of the key, he will be able to feed it into the post at a better angle (but if you, yourself, passed it directly to the post…the D might pick it off). Here is an easy rule of thumb…if you aren’t sure if the ball can fit through a gap, or you aren’t sure if they can catch the ball, DO NOT THROW IT.Note – we call these passes where you aren’t sure about the result “50-50 passes”.Throw short passes: Long passes are more easily defended. CLIMBING SHISHAPANGMA

If you think you are ready to climb an 8000er, then some of the thrilling and daring choices are Cho Oyu, Shishapangma (both to be climbed from Tibet) and Gasherbrum II ( Pakistan). The route to Shishapangma is relatively safe climb. It is not as crowded as Cho Oyu, so you can look ahead for a ‘just our team and the mountain’ experience.

Shishapangma is the 14th highest mountain in the world The altitude at the peak ranges from 8012m to 8046m. The mountain has two summits. The commonly climbed Central summit (8012m) has been summitted by four expedition teams whose expedition we helped organized.

Before the Chinese opened Tibet  to western mountaineers in 1970, little was known about Shishapangma. The only 8000m peak to lie entirely  in Tibet, it lies tantalizingly close to the Nepalese border, shrouded behind the great, but less high, board peaks of Langtang.

It is perhaps not surprising that it was the last of the 8,000m peaks to be climbed. Not that its ascent the North-Western Ridge presents any great difficulty. On the contrary, it is now regarded as one of the most straight-forward 8,000m climbs and its summit is frequently achieved. Regarded as a “holy” mountain by the local Tibetan population, and lying on the route to Mt. Kailash, Shishapangma continues to baffle us. Historians cannot fathom her names – Shishapangma, Xizabangma, Gosainthan, and surveyors seem unable to fix her height ( anything from 8,012m to 8,046m ) Even the first ascent by the Chinese in 1964 is questioned, due to the lack of photographic evidence and the fact that the summit ridge sports several subsidiary “summits”. Yet, the mountain is perhaps the most accessible of her genre, rising only a few miles west of the Kathmandu-Lhasa Highway.

IThe original North West Ridge route is an excellent objectively quite safe, and the terrain offers good  camp sites at the Tibetan Plateau (lying in the Himalayan Shadow usually provide excellent topping-out opportunities).

Detailed itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive Kathmandu 1350m

We meet you at the airport, look for a sign with your name on it.

Days 2-3 in Kathmandu

Two free days in Kathmandu for relaxing, packing and preparing. You can leave any gear which you don’t need during the expedition at the hotel. We keep your international air ticket at the office in case any changes need to be made while you are climbing. We can arrange a sightseeing tour, if you wish.

4 – fly Lhasa 3660m

We take a morning flight to Lhasa. The altitude is good for starting the acclimatization process, but expect to feel it initially.

5-6 Lhasa 3660m

We play tourist around Lhasa, sightseeing around the main 4 sites including the stunning Potala Palace and Jokhang.

7 – drive Shigatse ~3900m

On the road finally. If we get there in time we might be able to have a look around the Tashilunpo Monastery.

8 – drive Shegar 4350m

This can be a long drive, especially if there are road works.

9 – rest Shegar 4350m

We take a day trip to stretch the legs and aid acclimatization.

10 – drive Shishapangma Base Camp 5000m

Half a day of driving brings us to ‘Chinese’ base camp. The views of Shishapangma are wonderful from this grassy camp near a stream.

11-12-13 – stay Base Camp 5000m

We spend several days acclimatizing and preparing our equipment for the yaks to carry to Advance Base Camp. There are some superb day trips and we may even make an overnight camping trip, depending on how the weather looks. The itinerary from here on is approximate only. In 2006 we stayed 5 nights at BC including an overnight trek from there.

~14 – trek ABC ~5600m

It is a long days trek to ABC (Advance Base Camp). Yaks do the hard work while we trek carrying only day packs. Everyone will be feeling the altitude but it is amazing how your fitness builds with time. We begin setting up ABC in an ablation valley.

15-16 – ABC

We acclimatize further and have a puja, a ceremony to show respect for the mountain. The puja is held on an auspicious day decided by the sherpas.

17-39 (23 days) climbing Shishapangma

The expedition leader in discussion with the team members and sherpas manages the day to day running of the expedition. The sherpas carry the majority of the equipment to establish the camps leaving us to familiarize ourselves with the mountain and get more acclimatized, a long process. There are several different methods to ready for yourself for the summit bid, we will discuss them in detail on the mountain.

The basic plan is to spend 3-4 days at ABC then take a 6-7 day trip up on the mountain sleeping as high as Camp 2, 7100m. Logistically, it takes some sound preparation and organization to ensure all the camps are set up with the appropriate supplies. Then we need a window of good weather for the summit attempt and often this is a waiting game.

From Camp 3, 7500m, we have a spectacular view that stretches way into the distance to the north and also we can see Everest and Cho Oyu.

Summit route options

Summit day means a very early start. The best route to the true summit is crossing the face (in green above, and the picture to the right) but we judge at the time whether this is safe.

The route in yellow goes first to the Central summit, which we must fix ropes to. From there to the true summit is a knife-edged ridge that is rarely in condition for traversing, although it is only nasty for less than a rope length.

The other possibility is a new route (in blue): from Camp 3 we descend a little onto a broad plateau and will probably have to put a camp there. The slopes from there on are moderate although there are a few crevasses.

Once we have summitted we clear the mountain of our gear and rubbish and head out. We are likely to summit prior to day 39 but have plenty of time to wait out for the best conditions.

40-41 – cleaning the mountain

It takes several days to clear all the camps, and bring all our rubbish down.

42 – packing ABC

More packing! Occasionally we can arrange for the climbers to leave ahead of the expedition leader and sherpas. We judge at the time.

43 – trek BC, drive Nyalam/Zhangmu

We pack everything else for the yaks to hump down. The idea is to trek to BC then get the truck and Landcruisers there in the afternoon, heading to Nyalam or even Zhangmu. Back to thicker air!

44 – drive Kathmandu

We should arrive in Kathmandu late afternoon or evening ready to enjoy the good restaurants.

Day 45 – Kathmandu

Time for a good relaxing and shopping and to celebrate the expedition.

Day 46 – departure

Basically our expedition lasts as long as it takes to summit. We should be back to Kathmandu by this time and so plan your departure around this time.

 

Warning

We have run many successful and safe expeditions however you must understand this is as real as it gets. We try our best with safety and gear within the limits of the expedition budget and the success rates for Shishapangma (Central summit) are high, but this is 8000m and anything can happen. Even with good gear, good everything, the risk of death is small BUT REAL. There is UNAVOIDABLE avalanche danger, although the probability is low. If you haven’t climbed to 8000m before you will find the mountain bigger and scarier than you ever imagined.

We try our best and we are very responsible, caring people HOWEVER we are not liable for anything, full stop.

Attitude
Mentally, you should not be on this expedition unless you think you can climb to the summit, there is a lot of power is positive thinking. At the same time you must be prepared for disappointment; conditions may not be perfect, you may struggle at extreme altitude etc.

Experience and fitness
Despite the relatively non-technical nature you MUST have some mountaineering experience and MUST have been to 6000m before. The fitter you are when you arrive the better. You must be at least moderately fit, your fitness will build remarkably on the mountain. Don’t underestimate the difficulty and strength of will required to climb at over 7000m.
